Welcome to the Isle of Wight County Virginia Historical Society, dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of this region. Originally established in 1634 as Warrosquyoake Shire, one of the eight original shires by order of King Charles I, Isle of Wight County was later renamed in 1637 after the English island.

Nestled on the shores of the James River, our county's story encompasses the pre-colonial era with the Warrosquyoackes, early English settlement, the challenges and growth of a colonial society, and its evolution through significant periods like the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. We invite you to explore the fascinating tapestry of Isle of Wight's past and connect with the stories that have shaped our community.
